It might Suprise you, but AWAIR isn’t a sensor…
AWAIR displays receive and present data every hour from a real-time air quality model. This model is developed and maintained by the Environmental research Group at Imperial College London and is called a “Nowcast”.
The Nowcast uses air pollution measurements recorded in the last hour from the London Air Quality Network - a network of monitoring stations across London. This network uses ‘reference’ measurements which are the most accurate air quality measurements available. These are combined with the model to update the Nowcast model every hour.
This approach was chosen to keep the AWAIR devices as low-cost and as accurate as possible.
What do the colours mean?
The lights on the left-hand side of the display show the current level of air pollution at the display location.
The lights on the right-hand side of the display show the forecast level of air pollution for tomorrow.
